Explore Alaska's Oil & Gas History Today

The Alaska Oil & Gas Historical Society (AKOGHS) is proud to present the Haul Road Exhibit, a tribute to one of Alaska's most significant engineering achievements. This exhibit chronicles the construction of the Dalton Highway, also known as the Haul Road, and highlights the remarkable story of how the 358-mile stretch from the Yukon River to Prudhoe Bay was built. Through historical photographs, documents, and artifacts, visitors will gain a deep appreciation for the dedication, labor, and vision that made this monumental project possible.

If you are interested in learning more about the history of Alaska's oil and gas industry, or if you would like to become a member, we invite you to explore our website and join us in our mission to preserve and share this important part of Alaska's heritage.

The First Pipe of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline

Fueling Prosperity Exhibit

On March 27, 1975, history was made in Tonsina, Alaska, as the first pipe of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) was laid, marking the beginning of an engineering marvel that would shape the state's future. Stretching 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, the pipeline was built to overcome Alaska’s harsh terrain—spanning permafrost, rivers, and rugged mountains. Despite immense challenges, it was completed in 1977, unleashing a new era of economic growth and energy independence. The laying of this first pipe symbolized more than just the start of construction—it ignited a transformation, fueling prosperity across Alaska by generating jobs, revenue, and infrastructure that would benefit generations to come. Today, we celebrate this milestone as a testament to human ingenuity, resilience, and the pioneering spirit that continues to define Alaska.
